Let's Catch Up!!

Hello fellow racers!! It has been a while since we have posted information on our race, but believe me, the students are hard at work. We have established our route, and our modes of transportation. Based on cost and time factors, the students have picked the bus more often than the train or car. We are very fortunate to be able to take the train across the great
Western plains. That part of our country, while beautiful, is very hot!! Our final leg, of course, will be a plane trip from the Los Angeles area to Hawaii.

Now that the basic information about our trip has been gathered, we are going back through the route to decide exact timing for travel, type and cost of meals, logistics for transfers, and necessity of hotel stays.

One highlight of our project is our video conferences. These technology-driven gatherings afford the students the opportunity to visit with the race directors and the other schools that are participating. Below you will find pictures from our first video conference. Enjoy!!

Our race continues this week as the children gather up information on the 12 presidents the Race directors chose for the competition. First, we have to surf the Internet to find the correct information about the presidents' birthplaces (thank goodness for that lesson on apostrophes). This is no small task. In fact, each child will continue to gather required information on all of these presidents throughout the race! Watch our posters that are in the 3rd grade hallways if you want to know about these wonderful men! We found a cool website http://www.americanpresidents.org/. This site has so much great information, and some nice pictures. The children were successful this week - they found each president and his birthplace.

Now that we are experts in presidential birthplaces and where to find them, we can move on to plotting our course. Our classes have been divided up into 5 groups. Each group is given a map and an Expo marker. Their job this week is to mark the birth states on a map and determine the quickest route from Virginia to Hawaii. As you can see, the students worked hard. They accomplished their goal of finding the quickest route. Sorry, we can't post the route details on the blog yet. Our travel details are top secret for a while, but just know that we know where we are going!

Map Quest has been our best friend this week as we've gathered point-to-point distances and determined the most efficient travel routes. We continue to gather presidential information on all 12 presidents throughout the race. In addition to this basic information, we will also be matching presidential portraits to their owners!

The next step: Will we travel by car, train, bus, or plane?

The Great Race 2009 Begins

JANUARY 22 The 3rd graders are off and running! Our Great Race journey began with a video conference hosted by the Race Directors, Katrina Moore and Kathleen Mohr. They explained the race and its rules to us, and answered any questions we had. I'm happy to say that our 3rd graders asked very relevant questions. We were very impressed with them all!! Our next task is to come up with a team name and logo. Let the fun begin!!

JANUARY 26 This week we are voting on our team name. Since we are one team, each class will vote on a team name, and then we will all vote on one final name. Our next task is to find out the required information for the 12 presidents in the race. The students will pair up to get this job done.

JANUARY 28 We had a good set of names to vote on: The Mississippi Mean Machine, The SA Angels, The Mississippi Roadrunners, The Blazing Angels, and the Mississippians. I wonder what the children will come up with!!

JANUARY 30 With the votes now tallied, it looks like our team is officially The Mississippi Roadrunners. Watch out, fellow travelers! We will be drawing, and voting on, our team logo this week.
